One of the most common questions we get is “Why should we switch from Gliffy to draw.io?”
There are many reasons why, and one of the most important (other than draw.io’s unbeatable price), is that you’ll save a heap of time every time you work with a diagram!
Do you want to see the differences in action, and see how much time you could save each time you work with a Gliffy diagram? Here are five videos to convince your team that draw.io really is a more efficient and effective tool than Gliffy!
Draw shapes and connectors
You have to keep switching between tools in Gliffy, and set the connector style each time, manually. Whereas in draw.io you can use the blue arrows to clone your existing shape (with its contents and style) in four directions and a connector will automatically link the two shapes.
With draw.io you have to move the mouse and click much less than in Gliffy to do the same thing. Just look at our video to see how much time you save even when creating a simple two-element diagram!
Import a diagram
You can’t do this from within the Gliffy diagram editor, you can only import when you insert a new Gliffy macro. With draw.io it’s easy – drop the file you want to import onto the drawing area!
Of course, you can also use the menu to import files when you are in the draw.io editor. But we think it’s faster just to drag the file onto the drawing area directly.
In Gliffy, you have to paste a copy of the style onto each shape individually, via the toolbar. In draw.io copy the style, select all of the shapes you want to change, then paste the style – so much less mucking around with the mouse!
Batch editing means you can be sure that the right style is applied to all selected shapes – by pasting the one style onto all of your shapes, you are less likely to introduce errors. Plus, it saves time!
Do more with draw.io
draw.io has many features that Gliffy simply doesn’t support at all, which make creating diagrams easier. Here are just two actions that draw.io lets you do that aren’t supported by Gliffy:
Insert a shape into a connector
Drop a new shape onto a connector to insert it between two other shapes and automatically connect it to both existing shapes.
You don’t want to have to fuss around moving and inserting new connectors – that’s both annoying and time-consuming. That’s why draw.io lets you insert a new shape between two existing shapes and updates the connectors for you automatically.
Import a .vsdx file with multiple pages
Simply drag the .vsdx file into the draw.io drawing area and all pages in your diagram will be imported into their own page.
We love multi-page diagrams and we know you do too! They are useful when breaking down complex processes into their own sub-processes – you get to keep the detailed and overview processes together. We also use them for illustrating complex data structures and flows in UML diagrams.
Want to switch?
We’d love to help you switch from Gliffy to draw.io in Confluence – we think you’ll love the extra features and the huge amount of time you’ll save using draw.io! It’s easy to migrate too – you can convert all Gliffy diagrams in Confluence to draw.io with just a click with our mass import tool. Rest assured – you don’t lose any data in this conversion – you will still be able to access your Gliffy diagrams afterwards.
